Why So Serious?

I'm writing articles for the newspaper right now. They are particularly hard this time. My school is currently in campaign mode and students will go to the voting booths on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week to vote for a new student government. The reason my articles are so hard to write is that NOBODY cares. Over half of the contestants are running uncontested and our past voter turn out has been less than abysmal. Some of the candidates have barely tried to campaign, because they know they are going to win. The worst part is that this happens every year. The same people run for office and nobody votes :(
What are the student politics like at your college/university? Do the students care? And if they do, what is the secret? Needless to say, I find this very frustrating. I am a political science major and I really believe in the power of the vote. Student politics are important - these people affect our education! Apathy is never the answer! Especially considering our ballots have a "none of the above" option. You can vote for no one if you want, but just vote! Gosh...

This is going to be a super short post. I am currently studying for a Political Philosophy midterm (Hobbes, Locke, Hume) and writing a paper on the advent of student radicalims in 1960s America. Then, I have to work on a group project where we have to make a board game about evironmental and economic security! I cannot wait for reading week to start! Anyway, I hope you all enjoy your weekend!

News Room Antics

I took these pictures in my newspaper office. The lighting is so much better than in my apartment! These pictures are a few days old however. Today, I didn't even get dressed because I feel so awful. I'm sick! I don't know how this could happen to me, especially when I am so busy. Anyway, I slept for most of the day and watched the Tyra Show. Also, I did some paper research and caught up on some readings. Boring. I hate being sick.

Because I had so much down time today, I spent a lot of it on the Internet. Of course, I gravitated to the usual - newspaper websites and fashion blogs. However, today I found a whole bunch of new blogs about "plus size" fashion which I found endlessly fascinating. It makes me mad that there is even a term "plus size" especially when you see "plus size" models and they look completely regular (and gorgeous). Personally, I don't see why "plus size" models cannot do high fashion editorials, or why they need to be in a category all to themselves. However, my opinion may be biased because I am not a waif, myself. That being said, while I was reading through the various blogs, I found it disheartening that so many of these girls felt the need to call out "skinny girls" as being fake or anorexic. I know quite a lot of people who are naturally skinny, and I don't think it is fair to write them off as having some sort of disorder. I found that many of the "plus sized" bloggers were very mean towards thin people, and it is rather ironic. I think everyone should stop pointing fingers. Girls are beautiful in whatever size they come in and you do not need to point out the faults in your "opposite" to legitimize your own beauty.
Anyway, I cannot see this "size" issue disappearing from the fashion debate anytime soon. I am happy, however, that models like Crystal Renn have managed to land editorials in magazines like Elle that do not even mention her size and simply show the fashion. I'm an equal opportunity person, after all. What is your take on the "size issue"?

Can You Believe the Dictionary was Banned in a County in California?

Looking at these photos makes me REALLY want a good quality camera. Currently I am using a Panasonic DM-FS3, which is basically a run-of-the-mill digital camera (point and shoot). I have not really dabbled in the art of photography, but it looks really fun. Also, I would eventually like to be a journalist -- and with today's changing world and on-going budget cuts the job description for a journalist is ever changing. Meaning, that in order to survive in this cut throat industry, I will not only need to hone my photography skills, but film and computer as well.

My question to you, faithful readers, is what camera do you use? Ideally, I would like something that isn't too expensive and relatively portable. What is your favourite brand/model. I look forward to your suggestions!

P.S. Read my blog post title. Can you believe that? I know, right! It is 2010 and we are still banning books. I can understand that some parents might not want their children to learn about oral sex, but to go so far as to ban the dictionary is preposterous! Knowledge is power, and it is better to learn about something and get all the facts than to go through life ignorant. Schools should teach children about safe sex, not ban dictionaries. Personally, I believe that if sex education is properly taught to teenagers and children they will be better protected against STDs. Moreover, SexEd promotes healthy relationships and prepares youth for life - because whether or not a school ignores SexEd, kids are going to have sex eventually and if they have a better knowledge of what to expect and the consequences they are more likely to make safer and more informed choices. Anyway, this is just my opinion -- feel free to disagree!
